Comparing 3x^2 + 11x -4 = 0 to ax^2 + bx + c = 0
a = 3
b = 11
c = -4

sum of roots = -b/a = -11/3

determinant = b^2 - 4ac = 11^2 - 4*3*4 = 121 - 48 = 73
