What effect did California's status as a state have on the union?

Southern congressman strongly opposed banning slavery in the new territories. Some Southerners even threatened to leave the Union.

I believe that it had an effect on the union because their were no slaves in California so white miners and prospectors were unhappy, California had also made themselves a non-slave state.
