Renaissance Humanists were more interested in scholarly pursuits. They used the bible and Catholicism to pursue their interests - but they also proved many points of the bible incorrect or confusing, and undermining it. They called out the Church for being corrupt. Many people agreed at the time with the Renaissance Humanists' views, so they gained followers. That led to the Reformation of the Roman Catholic Church.
