Nationalism and extreme patriotism have been cited as the major causes of World War I. These factors led each of the Europe’s great powers to develop a strong but extreme belief in its own cultural, economic and military supremacy. Nationalism and patriotism also led to competition among European nations for the largest army and navy, or the largest industrial development.
