Well, during the 60s, legislation was passed targeting the Klan. Also hate crime legislation has its roots in the klan act because it creates charges that can be filed against members. Also, they are protected (just like radicle muslims, and the black panther) by freedom of speech, so as long as they dont go killing people, they can get in trouble. unless they are "violating someones civil rights"
