Answer: C. She was the first woman appointed.

Sandra Day O'Connor was the first woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court in 1981. She was appointed by President Ronald Reagan and served in the Court until her retirement in 2006.

Prior to her appointment, O'Connor was an elected official and judge in the state of Arizona. Considered a moderate Republican, she was often regarded as having the swing opinion in many cases. On August 12, 2009, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor of the United States.
