The First Amendment begins: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. What was the motivation for making this idea a cornerstone of American law?

The main reason they most likely created this law is because they didn't want to be over controlling alongside Britain and how they ruled. They most likely wanted to give freedom to promote the idea of a free country and free from Britain.
