How might the development of the American Southwest have been different if the mission system succeeded? (Texas and Mexico)

If the mission system succeeded, there might be another factor to enter American Southwest, and it would be the religious faith brought by the Spaniards. Religion was used to justify actions that were not entirely correct. Some people may learn to accept this during the process of opening oneself to a new religion.
