What happens to the lawyer at the end of the story? In The Bet by Anton p. Chekhov

The lawyer feels like a normal man at the beginning of the piece but after on, the study of philosophy and theology changes his mind. The lawyer realizes how silly it all was and decides to release the banker from the bet. Maybe he has wasted 15 years for nothing but gained a great amount of maturity...
