Why are enzymes necessary?

to act as a catalyst in chemical reactions



This is the answer because an enzyme speeds up the rate of the reaction, as a catalyst also does this job.

Without enzymes, proteins that control the speed of chemical reactions in your body would take place too slowly to keep you alive. For example, the enzymes in your gut break down large molecules into smaller ones.
