The annexation of Texas took so long because Texas would have been admitted as a slave state. That uppsetted people in the north but many people in the south were in favor of it

Texas would have to be admitted as a slave state. upsetting the balance of the equal number of states being slave states and non slave states. The U. S. President didn't want to deal withe the issue therefore ignored Texas for a year.
