Alexander the Great was not "great" by today's society meaning of "great" but by terms of the amount of destruction which he was capable of causing during his attempts to take control of the world. So, in saying so, Alexander the Great, is "great" he destroyed much more than anyone though possible, and yet still failed at controlling everyone and everything which he wished to control.

He was "great" not because of the person he was but the amazing amount of destruction he caused trying to take over the world
