A man left half of a sum to his wife, one third of it to his son and the remainder to be divided equally between his twin daughters. If each of his daughters received $85000, how much was the original sum of money.

I. Assigning the variable

Let x/2, x/3 and x/6 represent the wife, son and twins amounts. (x being the man's money)

II.Writing as we Read







x/6 = $170,000

III.Solving for x by multiplying both sides of equation by 6 in this case

x = $1,020,000, the original amount of money the man left to his family



IV. CHECKING Our Answer

$510,000 + $340,000 + $170,000 = $1,020,000
