Literacy means a person is able to read and write. Nowadays, around 80% of the world's population, older than 15 years old, is literate, however, this was not always the case. For example, during the Middle Age, only priests and nobles studied while everyone else couldn't even spell their names. This changed significantly once the importance of education was recognized by societies and the first printers were invented.
