What is the difference between selective breeding and genetically modified organisms?

Selective breeding is a form of genetic modification. Rather, it is the conscious selection for desirable traits. GMO on the other hand is generally understood to refer to organisms created by splicing genetic material from one or more organisms into another to create something with novel characteristics.
