On the contrary, northerners reacted to the Compromise of 1850 with suspicion and anger about the potential spread of slavery. Southerners felt that since CA was being admitted as a free state, this was immensely unfair as well. Although called a "Compromise", the Compromise of 1850 did little to quell unrest between the North and South.
