First find the area of the leftmost rectangle:
A=l*w
A=4*2 (the 2 comes from 5-3)
A=8
Then find the area of the rightmost rectangle:
A=l*w
A=3*3 (the second 3 comes from 4-1)
A=9
So when you add 8 and 9, you get 17
Hope this helps
