The correct answer is high rates of evaporation.

There are lots of minerals and salts found in the ocean. Out of which the main component is sodium chloride. There are many of the ocean where there is less or no rainfall. The evaporation there removes the water from the ocean leaving behind lots of salts because of which the salinity of the ocean increases.
