In this excerpt from "The passing" the narrator is describing how he feels after A) attending his friend's funeral.

The previous paragraph to the excerpt that we have here talks about the funeral in the following lines

"At the funeral, Joe Willow’s family cried, and old Fannie even fainted at the grave site when they started to cover him. "
