When you quote a document in an essay, why is it important to explain the quote in your own words?

Because its taking someone else's work that they could have researched for years and your taking a second to copy there work.

You should explain the quote in your own words so it is understandable and clear to some who cannot interpret the quote or do not know what the quote is supposed to say. Also, you would be stealing someone's words that they have worked hard for.
