It can change the force's magnitude and its direction. A machine can multiply force at the expense of distance but cannot multiply work.

A machine can alter an input force by changing its (1) magnitude, or (2) direction. Allmachines are subject to energy conservation in that no machine can output more energy (do more work) than the energy put into it.
