How did the deflation or decrease in the money supply in the late 1800s affect farmers?

What happened is that they would receive less money for their produce. This was a big problem because the price of transportation was still really expensive so debts started accumulating and eventually the system broke. The people who were farmers had huge issues with debts and poverty.
