The waxing of the moon can be noticed when the moon appears larger each night. A waxing moon has two phases, namely a waxing crescent and a waxing gibbous. During a waxing crescent, a thin crescent in the west part of the moon is visible. This indicates that the moon travels east in the sky. On the contrary, a waxing gibbous occur when more than half of the moon is visible. This indicates that the moon is almost halfway through its cycle.

Well the two phrases of a waxing moon is gibbous moon and waning moon. One is expanding (gibbous) while one is "shrinking" (waning). And usually they appear when the angle of the Earth is just right to portray a shadow while the Sun illuminates the moon.
