The primary causes of the decline of the Mughal Empire were the religious and political intolerance imposed upon such groups as the Hindus, Sikhs, Rajputs and Maratha, along with economic oppression caused by heavy taxation.

For the decline of the Mughal empire, there were a number of factors responsible, such factors include both the internal and external factors. Autocratic control, the decomposition of the nobility, deterioration of the Army, religious and Deccan policy of Aurangzeb, lack of Law of Succession, the extent of the empire, the emergence of the regional kingdoms, the economic bankruptcy are some of the examples of the internal factors. At the same time, the invasions made by Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah Abdali can be included in the external factor.
