How did the Freeport Doctrine affect the Illinois’ U.S. Senate election of 1858?

Please have in mind that the Freeport Doctrine was a doctrine supported by Stephen A. Douglas who was a senator against slavery at that time. Mr Douglas and Abraham Lincoln were trying for their respective parties to win control of the Illinois legislature. As douglas was stating his freeport doctrine he was saying that slavery could be prevented only if the determined territory wanted for that to be. The legislature of Illinois, which saw an important point in Mr Douglas' doctrine, reelected Douglas over Lincoln to the Senate
