-x - 5y = 16
2x + 5y = -7
-----------------------
1x =9
x=9 substitute
-9 - 5y =16
+9 =9
--------------
-5y =25
25/-5 = -5
y= -5

-x - 5y = 16
2x + 5y = -7
(add)
x = 9
(2 × 9) + 5y = -7
18 + 5y = -7
- 18
5y = -25
÷ 5
y = -5
