The Carp is a symbol of luck, perseverance, and success in Chinese culture. The Carp would have brought Yun Wang's imprisonment and torture like her father’s had she been old enough to publish them when the Cultural Revolution reigned, the book itself can be seen as a bold act of perserverance and success on Wang's part.
