Read the excerpt below and answer the question.

"What happened to 'Dee'?" I wanted to know.

"She's dead," Wangero said. "I couldn't bear it any longer, being named after the people who oppress me."

What is symbolized in Wangero’s rejection of her given name?

The freedom to choose her own destiny.
Her loyalty to her new boyfriend.
Her desire to appear more educated than her family.
A desire to disassociate herself from her upbringing.

I think it's the last one. Her name has nothing to do with the other answers. Names are given by your parents, so it shows she is breaking away from her upbringing (her parents).

Answer: D) A desire to disassociate herself from her upbringing.

Step-by-step explanation: In the given excerpt we can see that "Dee" has changed her name, she was named Dee after her aunt "Dicie" and her grandmother "Dee" to her mother, this name represented the respect she felt for her heritage, but Dee couldn't bear being named after the people who oppress her, so she decided to change it to fulfil her desire to disassociate herself from her upbringing (her family).
