Why did the U.S. Build the Panama Canal through Panama?

so there would be a faster way to transport things from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts

The Panama Canal was a shortcut for ships to take so it would be easier for trade. Before the Panama Canal, ships had to go around the whole U.S. just to get to their destination.
