you add the exponents
remember

(x^m)(x^n)=x^(m+n)

so

2 numbers in scientific notation are

(a*10^m)(b*10^n)=(a)(10^m)(b)(10^n)=(ab)(10^m*10^n)=(ab)(10^(m+n))

so add them
