Why did fear of communism swept the nation in the late 1940s and 1950s??

When the soviet union or USSR held on to all the land they captured from the Nazis many Americans panicked that communist revolutions would start in America and turn the US into a communist society which caused mass panic and made Americans want to fight the cold war.
