its setting the tone for tragedy and it's engaging the audience in the tragedy of the story, lovers that are 'star-crossed' meaning lovers who fate/ the universe is against, end up both committing suicide together. its engaging the audience in the tragedy that is about to unfold.
'doth with their death bury their parent's strife' is the next line which also works to engage the audience
