Julius Caesar was a key figure in the formation of the Roman Empire. When he rose to power he led many reforms which included a debt-restructuring law that eliminated about a fourth of all debts owed, numerous works in public infrastructure, and gave himself the title of "Prefect of the Morals".

However, his populist ways and authoritarianism led him to have several enemies within the Roman Senate. These senators would ultimately conspire against him and plot an assassination. This plan was successfully executed in 44 BC when a group of Senators led by Marcus Brutus killed him.
