in the valley, what made it perfect fighting positions for the insurgents? In war by. Sebastian junger?

it was a clear field where the main entrance was basically a mouth between hills. This made it a perfect defendable position. There was also stone houses in the middle of the field, and stone can stop bullets so the Insurgents could take cover behind the houses where the attacks would have to run across open field without cover.
