I believe the statement is true. Intravenous infusions of sodium bicarbonate are often given to acidotic patients to correct the acidosis and relieve the strain of rapid breathing. Sodium bicarbonate dissociates and becomes sodium ion and bicarbonate ion. The ions will then decrease the amount of H+ in blood, increasing the pH.
