While all of the above ingredients are in a cigarette, nicotine is the stimulant that causes addiction and dependency.

The answer is D. Nicotine.

Higher doses of nicotine have a stimulant effect. Nicotine actually acts as both a stimulant and a sedative. Immediately after exposure to nicotine, there is a "kick" caused in part by the drug's stimulation of the adrenal glands and resulting discharge of epinephrine (adrenaline).
