do outpatient you can leave when you want do as you please and residential is you have rules to follow by and you just can't come and go

outpatient programs are more like life councelrs its where the rehab program comes to you while residential is where you would stay in a facility the whole time your ther which can be anywhere from 3 days to years untill the docters believe your treatment is over with
