President Andrew Jackson's election illustrates the growth of the nation in the West that what Andrew Jackson famously described as "extending the area of freedom" in 1843. As more land was added to the United States in the following decades, whether or not "expanding the area of freedom" still meant extending the institution of slavery in a growing divide over definition.
