What determines whether a charged object gains or loses electrons?

There are only Two charges, electrons and protons, electrons are (-) and protons are (+) HOPE THIS HELPS :)

The polarity of the charged object, if it is negative - it gained electrons so that they exceed the number of protons. If it is positive, it has had a loss of electron(s) so that the positive protons exceed the electrons.
