"The North - by acquiring California as free soil. The main concession to the South was the Fugitive Slave Act, where the government would appoint official slave-catchers to hunt down runaways and return them to their owners. This law had the opposite effect from what was intended. It infuriated the Abolitionists so much that Harriet Beecher Stowe was inspired to write 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', which caused many more people to support the Underground Railroad. This raised the temperature of the slavery debate, and brought war closer."

hope this helps you!
