I now saw:

"Having gone out in the rain one day, in order to deceive her lover, she caught cold and died."

Why did the author include this passage in the story?

(I do not know what book this passage is from but here's my thoughts) It seems he added this passage to the story to add a tone of depression to the story, it also shows us the way she died giving us backstory to the events of the book and helping us relate with the characters.
