In Canto II, the Pilgrim compares himself with these figures because they are the only mortal men that had undertaken the same journey. Aeneas was the hero of Virgilio's "Aeneid" and guided by Sybil goes to Hades (Hell) and later to Paradise. Apostle Paul also took this same journey.
