Write the equation of the line that passes through (–1, 5) and has a slope of 3 in point-slope form.

x + 1 = 3(y – 5)
x – 5 = 3(y + 1)
y – 5 = 3(x + 1)
y + 1 = 3(x – 5)

using the formula

y - y1 = m(x - x1)

where m is the slope or gradient

from the question, x1 = -1 and y1 =5

and gradient/slope m = 3

substituting them in the formula

y - 5 = 3(x - ( - 1))

y - 5 = 3(x + 1)

y - 5 = 3 x + 3
