Jefferson was chosen because he was a dedicated patriot, for the most part. Other than this his writing style was very elegant and well written. He was only slight ahead of John Adams in the vote to be the primary write of the Deceleration of Independence. Also, he was born and raised in Virginia and stood next to Lee in the Virginia Delegation.
