How does friction affect a roller coaster?

Friction: A force that opposes motion and significantly slows down a object.
On a roller coaster: Friction slows down the cars as they move on the track when reaching a certain point on the track. When the car reaches the launch pad it applies it's brakes which, increases the friction and causes the car to stop directly where it started.
