The Posse Comitatus Act is a federal law passed by President Rutherford B. Hayes on June 18th, 1878. The purpose of this law was to limit the power of the federal government by prohibiting the use of military personnel as law enforcement.

The Act does not extend to the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard which are under state authority to act as law enforcement within the borders of their state.
