At the end of "invasion from mars, professor pierson" writes that seeing sightseers enter the museum to view the martian machine is strange when he rembers the first time he " saw it, bright and clean, hard and silent , under the dawn of that last great day" why was the day the martians landed the "last great day" ?

Because it was the last day that the humans ruled the Earth. The martians took over Earth so thats why it was called the last day.
