Why do we have three branches of government?

We have three branches of government to create a series of checks and balances, so not one branch(or set of people) have more power than the other. The executive branch is given a certain set of powers, but also limitations. The same is said for the legislative and the judicial branches. Where one branch lacks in power, another picks up, and vice versa.
