Actually you don`t have to use negative values.
The coordinates of the middle point:
x = ( x 1 + x 2 ) / 2, y = ( y 1 + y 2 ) / 2
In this case:
Latitude = ( 41 + 39 ) / 2 = 80 / 2 = 40
Longitude = ( 84 + 120 ) / 2 = 204 / 2 = 102
Answer: 40 N and 102 W
So your work is correct.
