At the beginning of Book Two, Julia confesses her love for Winston. This can be considered the beginning of their relationship and it is also what will ultimately lead him to truly defy the teachings of the Party (although he was already questioning these in Book One). This rebellion will lead to his demise, and therefore, this section can be considered the beginning of the end for Winston as we know him.
